New Journal / Book ProposalIRPH welcomes proposals for new scholarly journals and academic books that address significant areas of research, emerging fields, interdisciplinary developments, or established areas in which there is a clear need for an additional scholarly publication.
Proposals are evaluated on the basis of their academic rationale, originality, relevance, editorial strength, potential readership, quality of proposed content, and long-term viability.
Prospective editors, authors, researchers, and academic groups are invited to provide the following information to support the evaluation of their proposal.
1. Background and Overview
Please provide a clear overview of the proposed journal or book and the academic field in which it is situated.
Please address the following:
Describe the subject area and explain its current state of development. Identify significant emerging trends, research directions, or future developments within the field. Define the principal areas and boundaries of the subject covered by the proposed publication. Explain the background and origin of the proposal. Describe any existing research community, academic network, institution, society, professional organization, or other group associated with the proposed publication. If the proposal has developed from an existing conference, research programme, academic initiative, society, or scholarly network, please provide relevant details.
2. Proposed Title
Please provide the proposed title of the journal or book.
For a journal proposal, please also indicate:
Proposed short title or abbreviation, if applicable. Proposed subtitle, if applicable. Any alternative titles under consideration. A brief explanation of the significance and suitability of the proposed title. The title should accurately reflect the academic subject, scope, and intended readership of the publication.
3. Aims and Scope
Please provide a clear statement of the aims and scope of the proposed publication.
The statement should explain:
The primary purpose and objectives of the journal or book. The principal disciplines, subject areas, and research themes covered. Any interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary character of the publication. The intended academic and professional readership. The level and nature of scholarship expected. The contemporary relevance of the subject. The distinctive themes, approaches, methodologies, or areas of emphasis that will characterize the publication. The boundaries of the scope, including subjects that are specifically outside its intended coverage, where appropriate. For journal proposals, please explain how the scope will remain sufficiently focused to establish a coherent scholarly identity while allowing appropriate development as the field evolves.
4. Academic Rationale and Need
Please explain the academic rationale for establishing the proposed journal or publishing the proposed book.
In particular:
What specific academic or research need does the proposed publication address? What developments in the field make the proposal timely? What limitations, gaps, or opportunities have you identified in the existing scholarly literature or publication landscape? How would the proposed publication complement existing journals, books, or other scholarly outlets? What distinctive contribution would it make to the field? What is its anticipated national and international relevance? Why would researchers, academics, practitioners, institutions, or other members of the intended readership consider the publication valuable? Where comparable publications already exist, please identify them and explain the distinctive academic focus or contribution of the proposed publication.
5. Editorial Structure
For Journal Proposals
Please provide details of the proposed editorial structure.
Editor(s)
Please provide:
Name and affiliation of the proposed Editor-in-Chief or Editor(s). Current academic or professional position. Institutional affiliation. Relevant areas of expertise. Previous editorial, reviewing, research, or scholarly publishing experience, where applicable. Editorial Board
Please indicate:
Proposed members of the Editorial Board. Their institutional affiliations and areas of expertise. The geographical and institutional diversity of the proposed board. The basis on which Editorial Board members would be selected. How the Editorial Board would contribute to the academic direction and quality of the journal. Editorial Administration
Please describe how the journal would be administered, including:
Manuscript submission and handling. Communication with authors and reviewers. Editorial decision-making. Management of conflicts of interest. Maintenance of publication records. Responsibilities of the Editor(s), Editorial Board, reviewers, and publisher. Peer Review
Please describe the proposed peer-review model, including:
The type of peer review to be used. How reviewers would be selected. How reviewer expertise and independence would be assessed. How conflicts of interest would be managed. How editorial decisions would be made. How confidentiality, research integrity, and ethical standards would be maintained.
6. Proposed Content
Please describe the type and character of content that the publication is expected to contain.
For a journal proposal, please indicate the categories of manuscripts that may be considered, such as:
Original research articles Review articles Short communications Technical papers Case studies Methodological papers Theoretical or conceptual papers Data or resource papers Letters or brief reports Special issues, where appropriate Please also provide, where possible:
Examples of representative article topics. Examples of important research themes the journal intends to address. The types of researchers and institutions likely to contribute. The principal geographical regions in which relevant research is being conducted. The relationship between research, teaching, professional practice, and other scholarly activities in the field. For a book proposal, please provide:
A proposed table of contents. Chapter titles and brief descriptions. The intended level of the book. The anticipated length. The intended readership. Information about any contributors or proposed chapter authors.
7. Intended Readership and Market
Please provide an assessment of the potential readership and market for the proposed publication.
Please consider:
Who are the principal intended readers? Which academic disciplines and departments would be interested in the publication? Which universities, research institutions, libraries, professional organizations, industries, or other institutions may have an interest? What is the potential national and international readership? Is the intended audience primarily academic, professional, industrial, governmental, or a combination of these? What research communities or professional groups are likely to contribute to or use the publication? Which conferences, academic societies, professional associations, or research networks are relevant to the intended readership? How could the publication effectively reach and engage its intended audience? Are there established research communities, institutions, or networks that could support the development of the publication? Where reliable information is available, please provide estimates or evidence regarding the potential size and geographical distribution of the readership.
8. Publication Plan
For Journal Proposals
Please provide:
Proposed frequency of publication. Proposed date or period for the first issue. Expected number of articles per issue or volume, if known. Proposed volume and issue structure. Whether the journal is intended to be primarily online, print, or both. Any proposed special issues or thematic editions. Anticipated submission and publication model. For Book Proposals
Please provide:
Proposed publication date. Estimated word count or page extent. Proposed format. Expected number of chapters. Whether the work is intended as a research monograph, edited volume, reference work, textbook, or another academic format. Any anticipated future editions or related volumes, where applicable. Please also identify any specific requirements concerning:
Figures and illustrations Tables and charts Photographs Colour reproduction Mathematical or technical notation Supplementary material Online resources or datasets
9. Distinctive Features and Long-Term Development
Please describe the features that you believe will distinguish the proposed publication and contribute to its long-term development.
This may include:
A specialized or emerging research area. A distinctive interdisciplinary focus. A particular methodological approach. International editorial participation. A strong research or professional community. Special thematic issues. Links with conferences, societies, or academic networks. Emerging areas of research not adequately represented by existing publications. Opportunities for the publication to expand or develop as the field evolves. For journal proposals, please also indicate how the journal could maintain a consistent academic identity while responding to developments in the field.
10. Proposal Review
IRPH may evaluate proposals through an editorial and academic assessment process.
Applicants are requested to provide the names and contact details of four or five suitably qualified experts who could provide an independent assessment of the proposal.
Suggested reviewers should:
Have established expertise in the relevant academic field. Be familiar with the subject area covered by the proposal. Be able to provide an informed and independent assessment. Where possible, represent a range of institutions or geographical regions. The suggested experts may include proposed members of the Editorial Board; however, applicants are encouraged to nominate additional independent experts who are not directly involved in the proposed publication.
IRPH may, at its discretion, contact some or all of the suggested experts and may also seek assessments from other suitably qualified specialists.
The provision of suggested reviewers does not guarantee that they will be contacted or appointed as reviewers.
Supporting Information
Applicants are encouraged to provide any additional information that may assist in evaluating the proposal, including:
Curriculum vitae or academic profiles of proposed editors or authors. Proposed Editorial Board details. Preliminary table of contents. Sample articles or chapters, where available. Information about relevant conferences, societies, or research networks. Evidence of potential academic interest or readership. Details of related publications or competing journals/books. Any other information that demonstrates the academic relevance and long-term potential of the proposal. IRPH may request additional information or clarification where necessary during the evaluation of a proposal.
